About the Artist

Natalie Kulukundis was born and raised in Connecticut, but since 2000 has lived in California. At the age of twelve she went to a photo show in New York and won a camera as a door prize. That ignited her interest and she began actively photographing. Having learned a lot about photography on her own, she further developed her skills and technical abilities attending classes and workshops. Photography was not just a hobby but also her passion. In the summer of 2003, she decided to turn to photography full time and attended the Rocky Mountain School of Photography in Missoula, Montana. There she got formal training, building on and strengthening the foundations she had already developed.

Natalie likes to photograph a wide variety of subjects ranging from landscapes and nature to abstracts and portraits. Whenever she travels, her camera always accompanies her, using it not only to document and create mementos of the places she has visited but also to capture the soul of the place. She doesn’t always have to travel far away to find subjects to photograph, as many great images and opportunities are captured nearby.

Natalie believes it is important not just to use the camera to take snapshots of places where she has been or of things she has seen. She considers the camera an important tool in capturing and documenting a unique moment in time: the play of light and shadow or the contrast of colors in a landscape. She does not take pictures simply to record what she saw. Rather, she creates images and moods, which arise as she concentrates on the subject at hand. She believes that the aim of photography is not to simply take a picture, but to make people feel that they are actually there experiencing that moment or place in time.
